How to Prevent BJD Resin Yellowing — What Actually Works

A resin BJD is not a cheap purchase. Once yellowing sets in, there is no way to fully reverse it — only prevent it. Everything in this guide is practical. No vague advice like “store in a cool place.”

Why resin yellows

Resin yellowing is caused by oxidation and photodegradation. There are four main triggers: UV exposure, heat, humidity, and contact with oils and chemicals. Each one accelerates yellowing on its own. Combined, they work much faster.

UV exposure — the biggest factor

Direct sunlight is the obvious culprit, but indirect daylight coming through a window still carries UV. Even ambient indoor light adds up over time. A lot of collectors think turning off the lights is enough. It is not.

What to do:

  • When your doll is not on display, store it in an opaque box or cloth bag
  • For display cases, use UV-blocking acrylic panels or apply UV-filtering film
  • Keep dolls away from windows — even spots that do not get direct sun

Heat

High temperatures accelerate resin aging. Summer in a sealed room, or a doll sitting in a delivery box inside a hot vehicle, are both high-risk situations.

What to do:

  • Store below 25°C where possible
  • Open packages promptly after delivery — do not let your doll sit in a hot box
  • Keep dolls away from radiators, AC vents, and electronics that generate heat

Humidity

High humidity affects the resin surface, degrades elastic stringing faster, and causes metal parts to rust.

What to do:

  • Aim for 40–60% relative humidity in your storage area
  • Put silica gel packets inside storage boxes and replace them regularly
  • In humid climates or during rainy seasons, use a dehumidifier

Skin oils and sweat

Every time you handle your doll with bare hands, you leave oil and sweat on the resin surface. Over time this accelerates oxidation and makes faceups dirty.

What to do:

  • Wash your hands before handling, or wear cotton gloves
  • Wipe the surface occasionally with a slightly damp lint-free cloth
  • Do not use alcohol or household cleaners directly on resin — they damage the surface

Makeup and product residue

Pastels, sealant spray, and paint used during faceup work can leave residue on surrounding resin. Some products contain chemicals that directly react with resin or speed up yellowing. Dye transfer from dark-colored outfits is also a real issue — deep-dyed fabric left in contact with light resin for extended periods will stain.

What to do:

  • Mask off areas you are not working on during faceup
  • Hold sealant spray at least 20cm away from the surface
  • Be cautious with dark or heavily dyed outfits on light skin tones, especially for long-term display

Long-term storage

If you are putting a doll away for an extended period:

  • Remove the elastic stringing to reduce joint stress
  • Wrap the head, body, and hands/feet separately in acid-free tissue or cotton cloth
  • Store in an opaque hard-sided box with silica gel packets
  • Check on the doll every few months

One last thing

Some degree of yellowing is inevitable — it is the nature of resin. But the right storage habits slow it down significantly. MDollSchool resin is formulated with triple the standard anti-yellowing treatment, which gives you a head start. That said, no material is immune, and how you store your doll still matters.

If you are still deciding on a body, the G01, G02, and G03 comparison covers the key differences. Or if you are working out skin tone, the BJD skin tone guide breaks down all five options.
